The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has debunked an online report alleging that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was connected to an attempted military coup.
In a statement issued on Saturday, October 18, 2025, by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ described the publication as false, malicious, and deliberately intended to cause tension and distrust among citizens.
According to the statement, the decision to cancel the Independence Anniversary parade was made to enable President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral meeting abroad and to allow the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) sustain ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.
The DHQ further clarified that the recent arrest of sixteen officers, mentioned in the false report, was part of a routine internal investigation aimed at maintaining discipline and professionalism within the military. An investigative panel has been constituted, and its findings will be made public upon completion.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Federal Government under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” the statement read.
The Defence Headquarters urged the public to disregard the misleading report and continue to support security agencies, assuring that the government remains committed to the safety, development, and unity of the nation.
